Monday - Experienced Chess This is the same great program for the more advanced chess player with an innovative teaching program developed by former world champion Gary Kasparov! New materials, new techniques, new energy, new times, in the same great chess class. Sharpen your skills (logical thinking, problem solving, planning ahead, etc.) for success in both chess and the academic world. Available for grades 2-6. Monday - Fencing The Boston Fencing Club (BFC), the nation's oldest fencing club, is here at BBN! Drawing on centuries old traditions, fencing teaches discipline & sportsmanship while developing balance, agility & coordination. A sport that depends on tactical thinking as much as physical prowess. Appropriate equipment is required. Rental ($20) or purchase can be arranged with the instructor on the first day of class. Tuesday - Book Club Discover the wonder of books by joining your first Book Club. Themed exploration of books to "read" on your own as well as those that will be read by the Instructor. Tuesday - Chess Tournament Prep with Vadim We are excited to grow our Chess Program even further with the addition of another fabulous instructor and another day of chess. Vadim is a highly experienced Chess Master (Highest Fide rating: 2345; Current: 2250) from the former USSR. He studied chess under the supervision of Oleg Privorotsky (G. Kasparov?Ä¢‚s first coach) and has been teaching chess full time in the US for the last seven years to all levels of students. Vadim has taught hundreds of students from all age groups in elementary, middle, and high schools and has mentored many of them from beginners up to expert level and on to championchips. Vadim comes to BB&N with an excitement an enthusiasm that makes the game of chess fun for all ages. This class will specialize in the student that would like to take chess to the next level and to explore the challenge of tournament play. Available to Grades 2-6. Wednesday - Chinese - Advanced Beginner Level This class is a continuation of last semester's class. Only students that have had a semestetr or greater of Chinese language lessons should apply. Learn Chinese through music, games, role-play, and activities from an experienced and energetic instructor. Dynamic activities promote the practical application of pronunciation & grammar in a program dedicated to fun. Available for grades 2-6. Prior experience is required. Tennis at Mt. Aburn Tennis Club (MAC)!!! MAC is a private club located in Watertown that is opening its doors to our BB&N students this year. MAC has one of the finest certified teaching staff in New England. Groups will be organized by age and skill. The Tennis Junior Director, Ryan Segelke's priority is for each student to understand the fundamentals of the game, as well as learn to enjoy the game at a higher level.All levels welcome. Appropriate tennis attire is required (no-marking soled sneakers only, no food on courts, no students permitted in the exercise areas). Transportation to MAC will be provided at 2:00 with class beginning at 2:30. Class ends at 3:30 and all parents are expected to pick up their children at MAC on time at 3:30. Wednesday: Soapbox Derby Racer Your mission is to design and build the fastest, badest soap box derby hot rod in the land. You will work with your team to build a race car from wood, boxes, and parts from a hardware store. Paint and decorate your creation so it looks great on camera. THURSDAY
Thursday - Cooking Master Chef and internationally acclaimed, Chef Ost, owner of Sandrine's in Harvard Square, will teach gourmet tricks of the trade. The kitchen is your classroom and a professional chef is your teacher! Eat what you create and learn proper techniques and secrets of the kitchen. This is a 2 hour class.Available for grades 4-6. Thursday - Making the Band This is a class to bring musicians together to learn how to "be a band". Rock, country, jazz...whatever your style or interest, our experienced Instructor will bring you all together to practice as a unit. This is why you took all of those music lessons isnt it? Be a star or just jam with similarly minded musicians. Requirements: Child must have completed at least one year instrument lessons. Child must also be currently continuing private lessons outside of this class. As this is a specialized class, there will be an automatic waitlist put in place. The instructor and ASAP will work to put together an appropriate mix of students and instruments to ensure the success of this class.
